Community Building Through Gardening

Here at Sweet Earth Co., we love gardening for many reasons:

  • We believe having our hands working in the soil is very healing

  • We believe in the importance of land stewardship and want to do nurture the earth through eco-gardening

  • We enjoy the beautiful bouquets that come from it and the smiles that they bring

But another benefit of gardening we enjoy is the community building. Throughout this past year, we’ve enjoyed interacting with and helping our community with our flowers. Let’s take a look back!

Neighbor to Neighbor “Friends of Felice” Award

Flowers have the power to bring a smile to someone’s face and brighten their day!

Each year we give fresh flowers to local seniors in our community. We even won a “Friends of Felice” award from our town of Pound Ridge, New York this year!

We get as much joy sharing our fresh floral arrangements, as those who receive them. We especially love receiving the hand-written thank-you notes expressing how our flowers brightened up their day and let them know that we care.

Garden Clubs & Local Organizations

We are grateful to have been invited by local and national garden clubs to instruct and demonstrate on topics I’m passionate about. In particular, I created a program on eco-gardening and sustainable floristry that is specifically geared toward avid gardeners and floral designers.

We have also had the pleasure of hosting garden clubs and local organizations, such as the Bionutrient Food Association of Westchester, the Pound Ridge Garden Club and the Bedford Farmers Club, at our farm to share first hand about the sustainable practices we employ in growing flowers and herbs.

Wine & Design Workshops

We love inviting people to our flower farm for an evening of design, wine, and good conversation.

This year we’ve designed with dahlias and have some upcoming holiday workshops. No matter the skill level or prior design experience, everyone who attends leaves with new flower friends and a beautiful arrangement they are proud of. (You can always find our workshop schedule here to see what’s coming up.)

Expanding Our Community through Online Education

We went beyond Pound Ridge, and even New York, this year by launching our first signature program, The Eco-Friendly Cutting Garden! We loved getting to know people in other areas who share our love of sustainable gardening.

If you’d like to join our next live round of the program, get on the waitlist here.

How can you build community with your gardening?

There are many things you can do!

  • Share your fresh flowers with friends, family, neighbors, and local businesses to spread some joy!

  • Join a local flower CSA or gift a membership to a flower-lover.

  • Tend a plot in a community garden to get to know fellow growers or volunteer at a local farm.

  • Keep your landscape healthy by using eco-gardening principles. Learn more about eco-gardening — and audit your practices — in this blog post.
